In Loving Memory of My Son, Jamal R. Hurd
1990–2021
In 2021, my son, Jamal R. Hurd, lost his life to the battles of mental illness and drug addiction. His struggle was painful, real, and far more common than many are willing to speak about. But even in the midst of this tremendous loss, Jamal’s life continues to shine with purpose.
Jamal was more than his struggles. He was a loving son, a Navy Sailor, a friend with a beautiful heart, and a young man with dreams. His life left an imprint that remains with us today — and through New Beginnings, that imprint becomes a guiding light for others.
A Story That Becomes a Beginning for Others
Although Jamal’s earthly journey ended far too soon, his story did not. I believe with all my heart that life is not only about the moments when hope fades — but about the moments when new beginnings are born.
Through his loss, a mission was created. Through his pain, others will find healing. Through his story, others will discover hope.
New Beginnings Jamal Place Shelter & Outreach exists because his life still speaks.
His Legacy Lives Through Our Work
Every support group we offer, every person we reach, and every life we help stabilize becomes part of Jamal’s ongoing legacy. His journey inspires our commitment to those who feel alone, overwhelmed, unheard, or misunderstood.
Jamal’s life reminds us that:
- No one should face mental illness in silence.
- No family should feel unsupported.
- No community should lose another life to hopelessness.
- Through New Beginnings, Jamal continues to help people begin again, even in the midst of their darkest seasons.
Forever Loved, Forever Missed
This organization stands as a tribute to Jamal — his memory, his dreams, and the hope his story now creates for others.
Your life mattered, Jamal. Your story continues. And your light lives on in every new beginning we help create.
